Endodontics is a specialized field of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing and treating issues related to the dental pulp, which is the soft tissue inside the tooth. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue, playing a crucial role in tooth development. However, when the pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, fractures or trauma, it can cause significant pain and lead to more severe oral health complications. Endodontic treatment aims to save natural teeth and eliminate the need for extraction whenever possible.

Our Endodontic Services

Here at Roswell Family Dentistry, we offer several types of endodontic care to meet your needs, including:

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is the most common endodontic procedure. This treatment removes infected or damaged pulp, disinfects the inside of the tooth and seals it to prevent further infection. The process begins with the administration of local anesthesia to ensure comfort. Our dentists will then carefully remove the compromised tissue, cleans the root canals and fills them with a biocompatible material. A dental crown is often placed over the treated tooth to restore its strength and function.

Despite common misconceptions, root canal therapy is a highly effective and relatively comfortable procedure that alleviates pain rather than causing it. Many patients find immediate relief from the discomfort they experienced before treatment.

Other Endodontic Procedures

In some cases, additional endodontic treatment may be necessary. If a previously treated tooth develops a new infection, root canal retreatment may be recommended. This involves reopening the tooth, removing any residual infection and resealing it in a procedure similar to your original root canal.

An apicoectomy, or root-end surgery, may be necessary if infection persists despite previous treatment. This minor surgical procedure involves removing the tip of the tooth’s root and sealing it to prevent further bacterial infiltration.

For children or individuals with less severe pulp damage, procedures such as pulpotomy or pulpal debridement may be performed to remove only the affected portion of the pulp while preserving the healthy tissue.

Preserving Your Natural Smile

Endodontic treatment plays a vital role in maintaining oral health by saving natural teeth that might otherwise require extraction. Retaining natural teeth helps preserve the integrity of the jawbone, maintain proper chewing function and prevent the shifting of surrounding teeth.

If you are experiencing tooth pain or sensitivity, seeking prompt evaluation is essential.
